Q's and A's for SM Entertianment!

Hello everyone!

It’s me, SMgirl and here I am to answer the most commonly asked questions about the SM Entertainment Audition!!!
First off let me explain that my information is only what I’ve heard and read about. I have never gotten into SM Entertainment so some of this info may change.
These questions are one people have asked me and my friend that was in SM. Her name was Callie and I will put a Callie at the end of her answers.

Is it a disadvantage if I don't look Asian? Will SM accept non-Asian looking people?!
There's no non-Asian trainees at the moment, but give it a shot! You never know until you try. (Callie)

Is it true that some trainees never get to debut? :(
Yes! There are only few chosen to debut and most just quit sm. (Callie)

Must I sing in Korean when I audition?
No. You can sing in any language.

When I audition for singing, can i accompany it w/ guitar?

Yes you can!

What type of girls do they want?
Someone who is unique, has a nice figure, aura of an artiste, has a talent in the fields of arts (singing, dancing, acting), undeniably good-looking. I just noticed since almost all of the trainees have those common qualities. (Callie)

Do you get your own room or do you share?
You share.

If you decide to go to a Korean college while you’re a trainee, is SM going to pay for the tuition?
Yes. Everything that you needed will be paid by them if you're an official trainee.

What’s the difference between official and unofficial trainees?
Official trainees are chosen by SM and SM will pay for them. (i.e. Dorm, Food, Clothes, Schooling.)

Where do the unofficial trainees come from?
Korea. They pay SM to train them.

If I’m 16 am too old to audition?
Nope. (Callie)

Training includes singing, dancing, modeling, acting and language learning right?
Yep! (Callie)

How did you audition? What is the best way to audition?
Go to KOREA! I went to Korea and tried out for weekly auditions. There's a better chance to be chosen as their trainees compared to Global auditions. (Callie)

What’s a rhythm check?
A rhythm check is when the judge puts on a random piece of music and you dance to it.

How many trainees live in one dorm & how many in one room?
there are 2 buildings -> one for boys and one for girls
one dorm room -> about 8-10 people
one room (inside the dorm) -> at least 3 people each room.

Hey Callie, I really need some more Info about everyday life as a trainee. My parents aren't all that willing to let me audition because they are afraid of the environment. So what is it like? Is it safe and friendly? Please give in detail what it’s like.
Tell them SM will be the one to provide food, clothes, allowance, tuition fees, dorm, plane ticket to Korea (but not from Korea to your country) and more for you. it's just that they don't pay you. Tell them you train almost every day but you have a freedom to choose what schedule you are getting.

DAILY ROUTINE:
6 am -> wake up
7 -> go to Kent
3:30 -> dismissal
4 - 9 -> training sessions
9:30 -> we have to be back at home and as much as possible sleep at 10 to have an 8 hour sleep.

(Since I’m a member of the school's pep squad team, i start training for SM at 5 every Thursday and Monday). (Callie)

Good luck everyone!
SMgirl

  2. Hi there,

If I were to be accepted to either Yonsei or Ewha University, and as an SM trainee, would they allow me to attend either colleges? And would they still pay for tuition?

    Thanks you so much, Diane.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hey Diane!

About schooling SM says they will pay for college but I don't know if it has to be a certain one or not. :(

My guess is that you would have to go to special college.

  4. About the "application" is there is specific paper/form to fill out you can download/get online or just write a fine looking introduction and info the normal way on a piece of paper? - Just going to try and send an mail audition since I life pretty far away, but really wanna give it a shot until I have the money to go.

    ReplyDelete
  5. There is no sheet to fill out for email or mail auditions. But for the weekly they give you one to fill out.

Good luck with your email audition!

  11. Hello Tie

~I'm a japanese descendant, (100%), is it ok if I'm not korean, and wasn't born in US or Japan ?

Thats fine. Being Asian is the main thing for getting into SM.

~about the LA weekly auditions, what do you say to the judge ?? like... when introducing yourself ??

I went to the live auditions in LA. And there are no judges. There was one lady and she had you perform as she recorded it on a camera. She would then send it to SM in Korea.

~and how long does it take to know if you passed or not on the LA auditions ?

They will let you know within 3 months or so if you pass. If you fail they don't tell you anything.

    You're welcome!

  14. Tienakata,

I've talked with some people that know a lot. One girl was in SM. Another did the auditinos and almost made it but her parents didn't let her go.

I'd guess the Korean and English.

First round anybody can try out.

Second round. A few selected people get to try.

And the finall round is always in Korea with the leaders of sm as your judges.

  15. I'm 13(kor.age),I'm good at dancing and singing and I'm an honor student at my school ,I play piano and guitar and I love music.....i want to audition for entertainment companies but i lack information about them...
=What qualities do these companies look for?
    =What about my age?
=I live in Middle east but im southeast asian..do you they'll accept me?
=I only know little Korean and I still want to finish studies until college.will they pay for my education too?
    =I'm 159cm..is my height okay?
=What happens if I get in as a trainee?..will they provide dorms, allowance etc..?
=How many years does it take to train before debut ?
=I don't consider myself pretty because my skin isn't that good and i love food so im just average weight..do they consider the weight and looks too much?...but my classmates say no matter what i'm pretty and cute as i am
=What about my family?...i cant live in korea all alone right?
=Any suggestions on songs to sing/dance, behavior at auditions and things i should do to get casted?
your answers matter a lot to me so pleaase tell me what you think..sorry for asking too much questions...:)

    ReplyDelete
  16. =What qualities do these companies look for?

Someone who is goodlooking and has talent in the areas singing, dancing, acting, music of course will help you.

    =What about my age?

Your age is a little young for auditioning as you might not exactly know what you want in for you future.

=I live in Middle east but im southeast asian..do you they'll accept me?

As long as you Asian you have a chance.

=I only know little Korean and I still want to finish studies until college.will they pay for my education too?

Sm will pay for your schooling and colllege.

    =I'm 159cm..is my height okay?

    Your height is fine.

=What happens if I get in as a trainee?..will they provide dorms, allowance etc..?

SM will provide you with a dorm for sleeping, a small allowance, training, schooling, clothes.

=How many years does it take to train before debut ?

That depends on how much talent you have. Average training is 3-5 years.

=I don't consider myself pretty because my skin isn't that good and i love food so im just average weight..do they consider the weight and looks too much?...but my classmates say no matter what i'm pretty and cute as i am

I'm afraid SM does go by looks somewhat. Just like any entertainment company they need to find someone that will look nice. But skin problems are things for teens and such. They can go away. SO don't worry to much.

=What about my family?...i cant live in korea all alone right?

If your parents sign the contract letting you train with SM you can live there by yourself.

=Any suggestions on songs to sing/dance, behavior at auditions and things i should do to get casted?

Sing something that fits well in your voice range. :) As for dancing find a dance you love and just have fun. How to act.... Well me friendly, smile, be polite.

You did ask a lot of questions. But thats what I'm here for! :D

Don't worry about your height. You're only 13 so you'll grow still. :)

  29. Hey SM Girl ^-^
Well I've been wanting to ask this question for a long time...So I heard SM is really harsh and tough on artists and trainees. I'm fine with toughness, but there's a rumor that if you mess up, the leaders or the managers are going to hit you or beat you. I got sort of scared by that. Is it true?
Thank you so much SM girl

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Mimi!

Okay SM is tough, but not harsh. You are not beaten. SO don't worry. :)

Those are rumors made up by people who dislike SM.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi ~again..(*sorry*)
he said he was just doing a prank on me so that i'd be jealous....no need to worry about the link on facebook..:)

TRANSPORT:..how far is it to go from school to SM academy?.. Can we just walk to go there?..or do we need to provide our own transport for that?

~Do they reject you if you're not thin?...I'm not thin and not fat,i'm just normal..

thanks so much...so sorry for so many questions...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hey Jann,

I assume SM would provide transportation.

As long as you could lose weight I think they'd accept you.

    You're questions aren't all that long so I don't mind :-)

  33. hi hi !!
    me again !! :D
could you answer one last question for me ?? pretty please :3
~do you know how long it would take from the 1st stage (and with luck) to the contract signing ?? ~hahaha I know I dream big xDD

    thank yooou !!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Yuri!

If they are really interested I would guess it would go faster.

But the soonest would probably be 1 month at least.

    It's good to dream big.

    my name is Jessica....
I want to ask you something.
1.Is SMENT gonna pay the ticket to go to Korea if you got accepted through E-mail audition..?
because my parents aren't gonna pay my ticket.
2.are they gonna sent someone to pick up us in airport..?
3.is it true that there are 3 step of auditions..? and what is that..?

    thank you....
forgive me if i'm bothering you...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hello Jessica!

    You've got a wonderful name. :)

    Anyway,

SM will pay for the 3rd round audition. Is you pass the emial audition they don't pay for the next audition. :(

I think they might have someone meet you at the airport but I'm not 100% sure.

Yes there are 3 audition rounds.

1st could be a walk-in auditon at one of the weekly auditions. Or through email or mail auditions.

2nd round would be those who pass the first round.

And 3rd is those who pass the 2nd round. The 3rd round is also at SM Entertainment in Korea.

You're not bothering me. :) I made this blog for people who wanted to know more about SM.

    ReplyDelete
  37. HI SM Girl,

Glad to see ur blog! I've been looking everywhere cuz I'm curious if non-Korean can become a K-Pop idol. I'm a Southeast Asian, and my skin is not tat pale white but it is tanned white, not the dark one. I'm also a half-chinese. So, do u think I can be a trainee. I'm going for singing btw... sry. Oh yea, I'm almost 18 so do u think I still hv chance? Sry for the long question, but I'm really curious, pretty pls ans my question... will ya?? Thz a million~~ ^_^ (P.S. I'm going to audition through LA Weekly. Cuz I dunno which one is better, Global or Weekly) :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi!

Okay first off your skin color is fine. Yuri from SNSD is darker skinned. So is SooYoung. So don't worry.

Being part Chinese is a plus. :D

You still have a chance even if you're 18. As long as you don't looked old. (which like all Asians never do) You can make it.

The SM Weekly is better than Global. Less people so more time to focus on you.

    :D

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey!:) I just wanted to ask a few questions:)
I'm currently 14 and I wanna audition for SM. When you audition, must you audition for singing, dancing and acting and the others or you just audition for one? Cause I'm pretty good with my singing and well quite good with my dancing. And I am in my school's Drama Club. And I'm not sure about the rest. Also, I wear specs, so is it okay? My height is 163cm and I'm 54kg. Is that okay? I'm a Singaporean and I'm a mixed blood but mainly Chinese.
    Thank you!:)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Cowgu!

You have to dance and sing. If you audition for singing they make you dance to a random song they put on.

It's okay if you wear glasses. But for the audition don't wear them. Let SM see your face. :)
You sound talented so I'd say your chances are high.
Your height is fine about your weight I don't understand kg so I don't know.
Since you're mostly Chinese you have a high chance of being accepted.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi SMGirl..:) its me again...:) ahh I wanna scream... I sent my audition info and my composition to SM last Sunday May 8, 2011 and after 3 days I had a reply from the Audition Manager saying i'm invited to one of their global auditions but the date hasn't been set yet and they said theyre going to let me know when the auditions are going to be finalized...but...I FORGOT TO ATTACH MY PICTURE AND VIDEO OF ME SINGING/DANCING...i only included my COMPOSITION. So, I was wondering why they responded so quickly since netizens say that they mostly reply after 2 months...?

Anyways.. what should I do, SMgirl?... should I reply to them or wait for the audition date?...I can't go to US or Korea..:|

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hello!:) Thanks for your reply!:) Oh and how is the dance audition like? Also, if let's say if my first round audition gets accepted what will I have to do next? I've seen the SM audition website, but I'm not sure which is the correct email to send my application to /: and is the training extremely fierce and strict?
Thanks for replying my previous questions!:) Sorry to bother you with more!:(

    ReplyDelete
  43. Heeyy there, I have some questions for uu :))

    1. Will SM accept people with monolids if they're not HELLA talented? I think i fill in the other requirements based on looks, exept from my monolids, and my broken nose (its only visible from the side, and im seeing a doctor to check if i can fix it).

    2. I'm fullblooded Korean, but have SM taken in other people that doesn't live in either America or East-Asian countries? (like.. if I lived in the northern part of EUROPE?) Do we have a chance to be noticed w/o going to the live auditions? (I dont live near either Korea or America) >.<

    3. If Im going to send my audition via postal mail... can i just record a routine, put it on a CD as a AVI/WMV-file, fill in the required areas, and send it to their adress?

    4. If I EVER was to make it to the live auditions (Like if my parents would ever pay my plane ticket -.-) would they turn on a random song, and make me dance to it, after i finish the routine? (If I was auditioning with dancing) Cause i have a habit that causes me to totally FREAK OUT when im improvising.. O___O''
I can't just bust out with some crazy ass moves, and hit the beats to a random song I haven't even hear, just like THAT *snaps fingers*

    5. How does SM see if your ready for a debut? (Im very persistent, so I think I'll stick around there till I get tooooo old if i dont get debuted!!! XDDD)

    6. Ive heard that as an SMtrainee, there's a weekly dance-battle, where you compete against the other trainees (idk if its freestyle, or well-planned) , and if you dont show an effort, you'll get kicked out.. sounds harsh, so i wonder if its true :o?

THANK U FOR READING THIS, and Im so grateful that you've made such an AWESOME and HELPFUL website !!! :D - Emma (15) .. <-- as we're on it.. im not too old right? Im 16 in some months... wow,, i gotta hurrty.. O_O

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Jann Adriel
I would wait for them. Honestly there isn’t much of anything else you can do. :)

    Hello Cowgu,

What do you mean ‘what is the dance audition like?’
SM will play random music in which you dance freestyle. Is that what you mean?
SM has 2 email accounts that you can send too. One is for the USA and the other Korea
    For USA
    usaaudition@smtown.com
    For Korea
    smaudition@smtown.com
Training is hard but it’s not cruel. Despite what the rumors say they don’t beat the artists. :)

    You’re welcome!

    Hi Emmiiz95! :)

    1. Will SM accept people with monolids if they're not HELLA talented? I think i fill in the other requirements based on looks, exept from my monolids, and my broken nose (its only visible from the side, and im seeing a doctor to check if i can fix it).

I can’t really say what SM will and won’t accept. But if everything else is really good looking I’m sure they’ll give you a chance.

    2. I'm fullblooded Korean, but have SM taken in other people that doesn't live in either America or East-Asian countries? (like.. if I lived in the northern part of EUROPE?) Do we have a chance to be noticed w/o going to the live auditions? (I dont live near either Korea or America) >.<

    It doesn’t matter where you’re from. :)

    3. If Im going to send my audition via postal mail... can i just record a routine, put it on a CD as a AVI/WMV-file, fill in the required areas, and send it to their adress?
Yes you can do that. :)

If you dance your own routine I don’t think they have you dance to random music. :)

    5. How does SM see if your ready for a debut? (Im very persistent, so I think I'll stick around there till I get tooooo old if i dont get debuted!!! XDDD)
SM has monthly competitions or showcases between SM trainees. If you can do really well then they’ll consider you for debuting.

    6. Ive heard that as an SMtrainee, there's a weekly dance-battle, where you compete against the other trainees (idk if its freestyle, or well-planned) , and if you dont show an effort, you'll get kicked out.. sounds harsh, so i wonder if its true :o?
Not all true. Look above to see what I wrote. That is what you do.

You’re not too old! :D 16 is the perfect age!

    1) I'm half asian and half hispanic, though my face looks very asian but my body type is more hispanic also I have somewhat dark skin, does this lower my chances on passing the 1st audion?
    2) I plan on auditioning through e-mail so do they check the videos sent or is it an automatic responce? And about how long should I wait for a response until I'm sure they won't repond back?
    3) I speak a bit of korean being I am half korean so should I sing a korean song or just stick to an english one?
    4) I'm still in school, so if I pass the audions and go to korea, would the classes I take be in korean or can I take classes in english?
Okay that's all the questions I have so I'd be really grateful if you respond back. Thank you!(:

Well, just keep waiting for their reply…
    You’re welcome. :)

    Emmiiz95

Thanks! I’m glad to be of help.

    Daryl

It is somewhat an automated response but not everybody gets that. Myself for example didn’t even get that. :(

So think positively and I’m sure things will go well.

    Hi Rukia!
It’s not a bother go ahead and ask! :D

    1) I'm half asian and half hispanic, though my face looks very asian but my body type is more hispanic also I have somewhat dark skin, does this lower my chances on passing the 1st audion?
Not at all. Yuri from SNSD has dark skin. And they can whiten your skin like they did with Yoona from SNSD.

    2) I plan on auditioning through e-mail so do they check the videos sent or is it an automatic responce? And about how long should I wait for a response until I'm sure they won't repond back?
I would wait 2-3 months. If they never respond try making a new video of you talents and new photos and resend it.

    3) I speak a bit of korean being I am half korean so should I sing a korean song or just stick to an english one?
If you don’t speak Korean don’t sing in it. Tip: being Korean will really help your chances. :)

    4) I'm still in school, so if I pass the audions and go to korea, would the classes I take be in korean or can I take classes in english?
You would go to Kent. A school for people that speak English. Then they’ll teach you Korean and everything else.
Well I’ve responded, even if it was rather slow :)

    1) I have white skin.
    2) I weigh 92 pounds. ( I am skinny.)
    3) I am pretty. (That's what I think.)
    4) I'm learning how to play the piano.
    5) I have a nice voice.
    6) I am learning Korean.
    7) I have long hair.
    8) I am not asian, but I look asian.
    9) I love singing.
    10) I love dancing, even made up my own routine, for auditions.
    11) I play a little Accordion. (lol)
    12) If you ask where I am from, I am actually Turkish-American. Yes! But I look like an Asian. lol, that's good, is it???

  55. Hi Yasemin!

    1) I have white skin.
    That’s good. I think. :)

    2) I weigh 92 pounds. ( I am skinny.)
    That’s really good.

    3) I am pretty. (That's what I think.)
    Good.

    4) I'm learning how to play the piano.
That would be a good skill to learn. :)

    5) I have a nice voice.
    Good.

    6) I am learning Korean.
Learning Korean is good. Being able to speak English, Korean, and Chinese are huge bonus points.

    7) I have long hair.
I would guess they’d like someone with longer hair over shorter hair.

    8) I am not asian, but I look asian.
That’s great! I’m half Asian but I don’t look it.

    9) I love singing.
Well you should love it if you want to go into that sort of business.

    10) I love dancing, even made up my own routine, for auditions.
    That’s good also.

    11) I play a little Accordion. (lol)
A nice skill that would be good on tv shows.

    12) If you ask where I am from, I am actually Turkish-American. Yes! But I look like an Asian. lol, that's good, is it???
Yes looking Asian will really help.

    13) Can I sing a SNSD song at Auditions??
You can, just make sure you can sing it really well.

You’re welcome! And I’m glad you like the blog. :D

    Hi YR Kiddo!

    1) Does SM pays for the ticket to Korea if we got accept ?

If you pass the 1st and 2nd audition they will pay for the final audition round flight to Korean.

    2) I am good in dancing but not really good in singing , is that okay ?
Yes that’s fine. Like Hyoyeon from SNSD. She’s great a dancing but her singing is really lacking.

    3) How much will we got pay if we have become an official trainee ?

I’m not sure on that one. They don’t pay you though. They give you a small allowance.

    4) If we got accepted through e-mail . Will they call us from our country ?

I also don’t know that one. But they’ll probably contact you by email.

    5) Can i sing other entertainment songs ? Like CUBE Entertainment or maybe others .
    Yes you can. :)

You’re welcome! Glad you enjoy my blog!

    Hi Annabel

    1) How do I convince my parents to audition and/or train at SME?
Well number one is respect what they have to say. Parents are always concerned about their children’s futures. So what are they problems against it? Find those out and figure out the answers to prove them groundless. Just remember also remain respectful. :)

    2) Do they let you have cell phones, MP3's, laptops, and all those other electronic things in your dorm?
    Yes they do. :D

    3) Will they EVER let you visit your family?
Yes you can visit your family.

    4) How do they know if you are going to debut?
Depends on your determination and talent. Some great artists took a long time to debut.
    Profitable?
What do you mean by ‘profitable’?

  56. What about homework?? After coming from school, do trainees practice the whole day?? And what do they do?? Thanks!

    Thanks for waiting!

You can sing the same song or choose another. It’s your choice.

1 last thing, do they make you write your own song like JYP and YG, during training?
I don’t know about that one.

    Hi Number person! :D

You probably will have to fix your teeth if they need it. Skin not as much, since Sooyoung and Yuri both have dark skin I think you’d be fine.

If you do your first audition via e-mail and you pass it where will be held the 2nd audition or how ?

    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Annabel,

I don't know about that one. You could try emailing SM about that.
Don't worry about it though. :)

    MS,

If you pass the email audition you'll likely go to a global audition or else Korea.

    You're welcome!

  66. But are they going to pay the ticket for you in order to attend that audition or that happens only for the 3rd audition ?

Thanks a lot for your answers!

  71. Hi Darryl!

    Nice to see you again.

For a reply on the email audition it can take 2-3 months. Sometimes less but you sometimes have to wait a long time.

If they never reply after 3 months try your email audition again while improving you talents.

  72. LOL.... seriously 3 months? do you know of anyone who got it in weeks? Darryl. thanks!

  73. Annyeong! Woah! You know so much about SM ;D I'm jelly~ kekeke. Thank you for giving us information about SM it sure helps a lot!

I'm 13 years old( a bit to young perhaps?)..I'm Vietnamese/Chinese American and was thinking to audition for SM, I'm somewhat positive, committed, and aware of the consequences that I will have to suffer if I audition and pass. It was my dream to be famous when I was tiny soo.. LOL.

I can speak 2-3 languages (English, Vietnamese, a LITTLE Chinese). I'm 5"5..(IKNOWIMSUPERTALL.) and weigh 135..;_; chubby..but I can lose weight pretty well. I composed like 2 piano songs all my life haha..singing is plain(I have nothing special about my voice..;[), I'm a flexible person, so I dance well (preformed at several celebrations), I've acted for skits and plays so I have some experience with acting.

Looks; I'm confident with my looks, except for my weight..D: THOSE BIG THIGHS ARGH ;__;..but if SM put me in a diet, I would definitely try my best to lose weight ;D

Anyways- that's just a little of me. hehe My question is..

~If I auditioned for SM, would I have a high chance of passing?

~Does SM allow trainees to contact their parents?

~Is the trainee life really that harsh? ..I'm alright with the long day schedule thing, but I'm scared about the improvement-or-you-get-kicked-out part..

~How is KENT like? as in.. is it just like a regular public school with english teachers or...?

~Are you allowed to have internet access as a trainee?

~If you happened to pass the auditions, and took the flight to Korea to audition for the last round- SM would pay for it right? and also- after you audition for the final round, do they pay you for your ticket back to America?

Mianhe, for bother you with this long post D; I hope you find time to answer my questions >< anyways- THANK YOU! <3 :3

  75. Hi Darryl,
I’m not sure if I can think of anyone who received one so quickly at the moment…

    Hi Jae!

~If I auditioned for SM, would I have a high chance of passing?
In all honesty I think you’d have a big chance. :)

~Does SM allow trainees to contact their parents?
    Yes they do.

~Is the trainee life really that harsh? ..I'm alright with the long day schedule thing, but I'm scared about the improvement-or-you-get-kicked-out part..
It’s not harsh. It’s tough but not harsh. If you’re really determined you’ll do fine.

~How is KENT like? as in.. is it just like a regular public school with english teachers or...?
I don’t know much about Kent. But my guess it would be similar public school. But you never know what to expect in another country.

~Are you allowed to have internet access as a trainee?
Yes, but you are limited at what you can do.

~If you happened to pass the auditions, and took the flight to Korea to audition for the last round- SM would pay for it right? and also- after you audition for the final round, do they pay you for your ticket back to America?
For the final audition SM will pay for your flight. You might not need to fly back to America.. I heard a girl went there for her final audition and they accepted her and she joined right then and there.

    I answered the best I could! :D

  77. Hi Coolgirl!

It's fine if you can't speak any Korean.

If you're worried about being over weight try doing some light exercises and stretching. It'll help you look better.

  78. Hey SM-girl :)

Its me again :D . I got some few more questions to ask if you don't mind ^^

    1. I thought there will be a parents meeting with SM to confirm me to be a SM trainee ?

    2. Will they give a ticket back to my own country if i did pass the 3rd audition ?

    3. I do speak Chinese , English , Malay and Indonesia Lang , but i am learning korean lang now , will that be okay ? :)

    4. They will need to meet our parents to confirm us to be a trainee right ? :D

Hope you can answer it as fast as possible ^^ . Thank You So Much ! :D

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hi Gin Rachel!

    1. From what I heard SM doesn't need your parents to sign you on as a Trainee. THOUGH if your parents are against it they can take you away from SM.

    2.
If you pass the 3rd audition you'll start training then a there. So you won't need a ticket back.

    3.
That's great. The more langs that you speak the better!

    4.
I don't think so but maybe SM does that now... I'm not sure.

    I hope I answered soon enough! :D

  80. hey there, my name is Joey
I have few questions that weren't answered in this blong!(btw, thnx for this blog it was so helpful!)
    - Do you're parents have to know your going to be a trainee, what if they abanded you and you live with some one who is not family?

-um, and I am middle eastren born Iraq came to the U.S when i was eleven(I live in the U.S and have Citizenship) but I look asian, will that be a problem?

-I am 17 is that too old? (i love to sing, i am really good at it, and I can free style dance, I can learn a dance just by watching it 2 times)

    - and for the 2nd round is it goin to be in Korea? or in the U.S,

-if its in korea will you have to pay for the ticket?

    - also will they have to get your parents permission even if you live with another gaurdian?(who's not related to you at all)

    thank you (((:

  81. Hi Joey!

I'm so glad you like the blog. :)

    - Do you're parents have to know your going to be a trainee, what if they abanded you and you live with some one who is not family?

I don't think your parents would have to know. Probably your guardian should know though...

-um, and I am middle eastren born Iraq came to the U.S when i was eleven(I live in the U.S and have Citizenship) but I look asian, will that be a problem?

As long as you look Asian I'd say you have a chance. So that's not bad.

-I am 17 is that too old? (i love to sing, i am really good at it, and I can free style dance, I can learn a dance just by watching it 2 times)

Since you can sing and dance well that would be super helpful when auditioning. :D

    - and for the 2nd round is it goin to be in Korea? or in the U.S,

Depends where you audition. If you audition in LA I think you'd go there again. But if you do your first audition in Korea it'll probably be there.

-if its in korea will you have to pay for the ticket?

Yes, unless it's for the final audition round. I heard they will pay for your ticket then.

    - also will they have to get your parents permission even if you live with another gaurdian?(who's not related to you at all)

As long as your guardian approves and all that's fine. Your parents have not part in it then.

    You're welcome. :D

  82. Hello SM Girl!!! :]
I just wanted to know what happens to SM trainees that never get to debut.

If they got chosen and trained why dont they?

Is it true that you can't quit because you already signed a contract and work for them in some other way like a trainer for other trainees/ etc.

Also if you dont debut do you have a debt on your head because they spent money training you and you have to pay it all back?

Thanks for creating this blog and sharing your knowledge with everyone. Please reply.

    Thanks again SM Girl!

  84. Hello frogger,

If they got chosen and trained why dont they?

There are a couple of reasons why some don't debut. Most quit and some just don't improve and get kicked out.

Is it true that you can't quit because you already signed a contract and work for them in some other way like a trainer for other trainees/ etc.

You can quit but you must sing 5 songs in a row or else dance for was it... 10 or 15 minutes straight.
Sounds strange but that's what Callie said.

Also if you dont debut do you have a debt on your head because they spent money training you and you have to pay it all back?

    I don't think you'll have any debt. :)

  85. Hi Nina!

    You're welcome!

    1. My friend and I wanted to audition (by e-mail) i'm half japanese/half hispanic so i think that's good, but she's half american/half hispanic so we were wondering if there was a chance for us to be accepted even if we're not korean.

Yes there is a chance. SM has trainees that aren't Korean, so don't worry.

    2. I play piano and guitar, I'm also really athletic and a good dancer, I speak englis, spanish and japanese :D, my height is 5'4 and my weight is 105 pounds (by the way I'm 16), but I don't sing that well (just fine), would that be ok anyway???

Well you can dance well so it'd sorta be like Hyoheon from SNSD. She's a great dancer but her singing is just okay. :)

I'm so glad you like my blog! :D

  87. Hi Another blogger!

After you send an email there are couple of replies. Most receive an invitiation to a global audition. Some I think get to go in to weekly.
And sometimes they don't even reply.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  88. so they dont tell you if they want to be a trainee or anything like that??

    ReplyDelete
  89. Hi blogger!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean.

But you have to audition 3 times and if you pass the final audition they'll let you know if they want you to be a trainee. Until you do the 3rd audition they won't say anything about it.

  90. Hey its me Darryl again, err when you send the email in, you put your clips and pictures as attachments right? but i heard that by sending it as attachments they mark it as spam or something.

I have not heard them marking that as spam. But to avoid that post your pictures with you email. Not as an attachment.

  92. Hey SM Girl :)

I have a few question to ask you ^^

    1. If we want to attend the Global Audition , should we send our video to SM and wait ?

    2. If we pass the 1st and 2nd audition but we fail in the 3rd audition . Will SM pay our ticket back to our country ?

    3. Is it okay if we have a bit of tanned skin ?

    4. I heard that if we audition for dance in the 1st audition . We have to audition others in the 2nd audition . Is that true ?

    5. If we got accepted through e-mail , what do we have to do next ?

Hope you can answer these questions as soon as possible . Thank You So Much SM Girl for all this information ^^

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hey Ginger Rachel,

    1. If we want to attend the Global Audition , should we send our video to SM and wait ?

You audition by email and get invited to audition live in a global would be a good idea. If you've already passed the email audition, SM will pay you special attention in the global audition.

    2. If we pass the 1st and 2nd audition but we fail in the 3rd audition . Will SM pay our ticket back to our country ?

I think they do. But I could easily be wrong.

    3. Is it okay if we have a bit of tanned skin ?

    Perfectly fine.

    4. I heard that if we audition for dance in the 1st audition . We have to audition others in the 2nd audition . Is that true ?

If you audition for dance, they'll always ask you to sing just a little.

    5. If we got accepted through e-mail , what do we have to do next ?

You'll probably be invited to attend a global audition. So you'll probably have to wait until a global audition is hosted nearby.

I hope I answered your questions satisfactory. Good luck! :D

  94. Haylo SM Girl,

Could you just answer a few questions from me? I've read through the Q&A above and I 'm still curious about some stuff, so, bear with me. :D

For those who apply for singers, do they ask you to dance as well? If not, or if yes, what else do they ask you to show?

Could you tell me what we'd be doing in the 2nd and 3rd auditions (like step by step if you know) IF we passed the 1st/2nd auditions and IF we apply for a singer?

I saw you mentioned that trainees are restricted to do some stuff on the internet, like what for example?

Does applying and becoming a trainee (IF ACCEPTED) mean that you are giving up your academic future? (I think its yes but just wanted to confirm it)

How many people averagely get in out of a hundred (or something)? (Lets say they are not sending in super dumb forms or spam)

How many trainees are there currently?

Why do some trainees quit SM?

Ok, thats about it. Sorry for bothering you. I ask alot of questions, haha! xD Hope you answer my questions, thanks! :) Your blog is really useful and informative.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Hello Summer,

For those who apply for singers, do they ask you to dance as well? If not, or if yes, what else do they ask you to show?

Yes you must dance. They'll put on some random music with a strong beat and you just have to dance.

Could you tell me what we'd be doing in the 2nd and 3rd auditions (like step by step if you know) IF we passed the 1st/2nd auditions and IF we apply for a singer?

I can't really say as I never got that far. But I'm sure it will be very similar to what the 1st audition round was like. Although on the 3rd round I'm guessing they'll ask you more questions and try to get to know you better.

I saw you mentioned that trainees are restricted to do some stuff on the internet, like what for example?

No Facebook, twitter and you can't post any pictures of yourself online.

Does applying and becoming a trainee (IF ACCEPTED) mean that you are giving up your academic future? (I think its yes but just wanted to confirm it)

No, SM will pay for all of your schooling. Even college.

How many people averagely get in out of a hundred (or something)? (Lets say they are not sending in super dumb forms or spam)

Depends. Hangeng from SUJU was was 1 out of 10,000 people. Chances are slim but if you're talented you have a shot.

How many trainees are there currently?

I think about 20. Not very many.

Why do some trainees quit SM?

Get homesick, feed up of to much to handle. Decide they don't want to be an entertainer.

I think I answered all of your questions. And it was a bother :) Good luck!

  96. Hey SM girl i have a few questions to ask you and it would mean so much to me if you replied. (:

Firstly, a bit about myself, I am full Chinese, Singaporean and have just been introduced to Kpop! I would love to take part in the global auditions but unfortunately they hardly have it here in singapore. I am more arts-inclined, am very fluent in both Chinese and English and know a bit of Malay as well. I will be starting Korean lessons by the end of the year. I have a decent singing voice and have been told by a few people that my voice is good, but personally i feel that my voice is nice, but not strong. I learn the piano. I used to take dancing lessons but stopped 5 years ago. I am pretty good in acting too.

    1) I most probably will be taking acting, dancing and singing lessons end of this year so as to learn basic dance, train my voice and hone my acting skills. With that, what do you think my chances of getting in are? I am a bit chubby now but I am going to work hard to become slim.

    2) In reference to the first point, i am probably going to send my audition clip via email next year after my different classes (singing, acting and dancing) and basic korean language.

    3) As SM are all professionals, do you think that they would be able to see that i have been professionally trained (ie my classes) and not choose me? I am sure they want someone more naturally talented.

    4) I am definitely stronger in singing and acting, dancing could be my weakest point as of right now (before my classes) However, i have good rhythm skills (ie my piano) and would be able to do the rhythm test. I know SM goes via singing, dancing & acting to "organize" how you do your audition. Most do singing, and they make them dance as well. However, I would want to sing and then act. Is that possible in the global auditions or should i send them a clip instead? This is probably the most important question as if i do get into SM, i would love to be a singer/actor more than a dancer. And if i do go to the SM global auditions, should i sign up as a singer or actor?

I hope you take time to look through my questions and answer them as it would mean alot to me. Thanks! (:

  97. Hello Mika,

If you work on your dancing again that'l help you lose weight. Also eating healthy will be good for your voice as well as skin and body.

    2) In reference to the first point, i am probably going to send my audition clip via email next year after my different classes (singing, acting and dancing) and basic korean language.

Sounds like a good plan. :)

    3) As SM are all professionals, do you think that they would be able to see that i have been professionally trained (ie my classes) and not choose me? I am sure they want someone more naturally talented.

I'm not sure what you mean by this questions. But being like a pro is totally fine. :)

You can put down that you are a singer AND actor. They let you be more than one. :) I would email your audition and then hope they invite you to a global audition.

I carefully read through all of your questions.

Thanks for using my blog and good luck with your audition. :D

  98. hey its me again (: anyway, i have a few more questions and thank you for replying my previous few haha (:

    1) After knowing abit more about my talents and such, do you think i have a chance to get in and how high are my chances? Please be brutally honest.

    2) Does SM accept you via your email audition or do you HAVE to go down for an audition globally? That doesn't make much sense to me because it seems like the email audition is a waste of time, you still have to go to the global audition no matter what. Is there any special privileges you get when they take notice of you at the email audition?

    3) How should the video for the email audition be? Should it seem professional, or just a simple clip or me singing and talking a bit about myself? Do you think i should add in a clip of me acting or dancing as well? (i have mentioned before that i'm better in acting and singing)

    thanks! (:

  99. Hi again Mika,

    1) After knowing abit more about my talents and such, do you think i have a chance to get in and how high are my chances? Please be brutally honest.

In my honest opinion you have a fair chance. But it all depends on if you are the type SM is looking for.

    2) Does SM accept you via your email audition or do you HAVE to go down for an audition globally? That doesn't make much sense to me because it seems like the email audition is a waste of time, you still have to go to the global audition no matter what. Is there any special privileges you get when they take notice of you at the email audition?

They is special treatment if you get accepted by email and then audition for the global audition. SM will have you fill out a sheet at the audition and you can mark that you are already have passed the email audition. So they'll spend more time or else attention on you.

    3) How should the video for the email audition be? Should it seem professional, or just a simple clip or me singing and talking a bit about myself? Do you think i should add in a clip of me acting or dancing as well? (i have mentioned before that i'm better in acting and singing)

I would make it nice and short. I'd make the video about 6 minutes.
And just start the video by saying hello my name is _____ and then say what you are auditioning for and then show the video of you doing your talents.

Have fun remember. That's always the best part.

  100. Hi! I'm Susan! I will like to audition for SM Entertainment. I just want to say thank you so much for putting your time out and answering all of our questions.

I'm 23 years old, I'm Vietnamese and a quarter White, 5'6, and I weigh 130. I know I'm consider to be old, but you think I will make it? And am I consider to be fat? Should I lose weight?

I'm currently studying how to speak korean.
I'm not the best singer, I'm not bad either (my voice is similar to Selena Gomez), and I'm okay at dancing. I take voice lesson every week, and also hip hop dance class every week.

I have tattoos, and I'm afraid that they won't accept me because of my tattoos. I have some revealing tattoos, and some are hidden.

I have what it takes, because I am determined and motivated. Could you please help me get through this? I'm planning on going to LA for SM weekly for their weekly auditioning. And I'm going to send in my videos, and pictures through mail to korea every two weeks.

Should I put this as my intro... "Hi I'm Susan, I am 23 years old, I am 168 cm, I weigh 130 lbs, and I am Vietnamese and a quarter white. and I am auditioning to be a Singer. I know you are suppose to audition at a young age, and I know that my age is consider to be too old, but please Let me show you that age is just a number, I will give it my all, because I have faith in myself". Should I say that? And I'm auditioning as a singer, should I dance in my videos too?

    Here is my photo http://a1.twimg.com/profile_images/1389460844/profilepix.jpg

Oh please tell me what are the audition like. If you pass the first round, does that means you have to compete more audition against others? How does it go?

Thank you again for putting your time out reading this, and I hope to hear from you soon! Thanks again.

  101. Hello Susan!

    Thanks for thanking me. :)

Weight is important but looking healthy is better. Don't worry too much about losing weight. Try to get healthy and fit and you'll be fine.

I'm currently studying how to speak korean.
I'm not the best singer, I'm not bad either (my voice is similar to Selena Gomez), and I'm okay at dancing. I take voice lesson every week, and also hip hop dance class every week.

From what is sounds singing won't be your strong point but it should hold you down. Keep focusing on singing but work extra hard on your dancing.

I have tattoos, and I'm afraid that they won't accept me because of my tattoos. I have some revealing tattoos, and some are hidden.

I actually don't know what SM will think of tattoos... I would say this would be minus points when auditioning. :((

I have what it takes, because I am determined and motivated. Could you please help me get through this? I'm planning on going to LA for SM weekly for their weekly auditioning. And I'm going to send in my videos, and pictures through mail to korea every two weeks.

Okay I would go in live and audition in LA. I would NOT send Korea mail every 2 weeks. They'll get annoyed and might never even look at it.
I just do my best with the LA audition and what to see what happens.

Here is what you should fill out when doing email or mail audition. (I'll put this at the very end)

    Here is my photo http://a1.twimg.com/profile_images/1389460844/profilepix.jpg

You're very pretty. I would go a little more natural when you go in to audition because you're already super pretty.

Oh please tell me what are the audition like. If you pass the first round, does that means you have to compete more audition against others? How does it go?

    1st round is for everyone.
2nd round is harder and only those who have pasted the 1st round are in it.
3rd round is the hardest and is always in Korea where you perform more and longer in front of the director of SM Entertainment.

    Hope I helped you.

  102. What should I do when I do a live audition? Should I just put that I wanted to be dancer instead? Because I know they are going to make me sing, then once if I did go in as a trainee then they would figure what to do with me? What do you think? Or should I just stick to putting as a singer and they will make dance for them?

Also, Should I cover up? Because I have tattoos?

Thank you so much, I will absolutely go natural when I audition. And what should I say when I do a live audition? Just say Hi and my name is?

And, for the "How to Apply For an Audition" Do I just print it out in a piece of paper? and type it out?

I'm so afraid of that they wont accept me because of my age and my tattoos, and its making me doubting myself. =(

And thank you so much for your help, i really mean it!! you're the greatest. MUAH!

I still have a little more to ask , is that okay ? :)

    1. I have scars on my right is that okay ? Will that be a minus point for the audition ? :(

    2. I heard that every week there will be like a battle for something ( i don't know :/ ) to choose em to be debut is it true ?

    3. Will they see my email audition if i send it to them ? :/ . How long will it takes to get replies from them ?

    4. Is it true that a trainee can't get to surf on the internet AT ALL ? Even video call with our parents ? :(

    5. Will i have a high chance to pass the audition if i send them an email audition ? :)

Thank You For Answering :) . I really appreciate :3

  104. Hi Ginger!

    1. It should be fine as long as it's not huge.

    2. It's once a month and yes you compete against other trainees.

    3. It could be a few days... it could be a few months.

    4. You can get online. Just no Facebook, Twitter, Formspring, etc.

    5. Passing the email audition isn't too hard. But you'll only be invited to attend a global audition.

    You're welcome! :D

  106. Hello Reasons,

You will have to get yourself to the global audition. They won't pay for you.

There will be a lot of other people there.

  107. i heard from a friend that you wake up around 10, eat you breakfast around 11 and leave around 12 or 1 depending if you have a class at 1.
you leave the building at around 9 and if you don't have classes that day then you get to leave early....
training doesn't always include acting and modeling.... unless you have absolutely no talent in singing or dancing whatsoever

if your overweight but got a good enough bod shape and pretty, then you can just go on a diet. even if your short its ok... just wear insoles...

3.is it true that there are 3 step of auditions..? and what is that..?
if you make it then they pay AND some one DOES pick u up :D

  109. Hey SM girl i have a couple of questions again (:

    1) For my mail audition, should i send it through post or email? Which one has higher chances of being read?

    2) Should i save my singing clip as mp3 format or as a video of me singing? I am afraid that if i send a video of me singing the file would be too big to send over through email.

    3) What kind of pictures should i send them? Professionally shot ones, passport photos or are selcas fine?

    4) How long would SM take to reply? I have heard timeframes from 4days - a few months, how long are they currently taking to reply?

    5) For email auditions, is it true that if you don't get in they would just send you a generic email saying that you were accepted but they haven't set a date for the global auditions or something like that? How many different replies can you get on your email if you were to send it?

    THANKS (:

    ReplyDelete
  110. Hi Mika

    1) For my mail audition, should i send it through post or email? Which one has higher chances of being read?

I would think mail... but there or more chances of it getting lost or stolen.
I'd say it ends up being 50/50

    2) Should i save my singing clip as mp3 format or as a video of me singing? I am afraid that if i send a video of me singing the file would be too big to send over through email.

It has to be a video file. But if you're worried about it being to large as long as you are using Windows Movie Maker... you can publish it to yourself and choose how big you want the file size to be.

    3) What kind of pictures should i send them? Professionally shot ones, passport photos or are selcas fine?

Not professionally unless you already have some. It'd cost to much otherwise.
Have a friend that's good with a camera take them. :D

    4) How long would SM take to reply? I have heard timeframes from 4days - a few months, how long are they currently taking to reply?

From what you've heard that's about right. Currently I don't know. I haven't sent any to them.

    5) For email auditions, is it true that if you don't get in they would just send you a generic email saying that you were accepted but they haven't set a date for the global auditions or something like that? How many different replies can you get on your email if you were to send it?

Getting a reply for the Global auditions isn't a refusal. SM is busy right now so they don't have a date for Global auditions.

I've only heard of 2 different emails.

    ReplyDelete
  111. What two emails have you heard of? (:

oh and for the video auditions, do i have to include a clip in front of me introducing myself? If so what should i say?

  112. Hi Mika,

The first email was the basic one for Global auditions.

Second one was in Chinese I think and it read...
    Hello!
I am a SM Entertainment abroad (China, Japan, the United States) AUDITION head.
Thank you for your concern about SM Entertainment, the first to inform you that we have received your E-mail application. Review, we will notify the person issued a notice at the same time, SM overseas (China, Japan, the United States) AUDITION time, giving you the opportunity to participate in overseas audition. SM AUDITION entry and growth for all expenses for the Stars SM company.
Thank you for your interest in the company of the SM, for AUDITION application.

    Hope that helps you Mika!

  114. Hi Mika,

I don't have the email that was in Chinese. I'm sorry.

Yes introduce yourself, something like this could work:
Hello my name is _______ I'm __ years old and I'm auditioning for _____ the song I'm singing is ____

That should be good and just make sure that you are comfortable with the camera and make sure to smile and have fun! :D

  117. I love this blog!
I have a few questions which may have already been asked- sorry :P

I'm almost 18 and I have really pale skin even though I'm in the sun a lot :P I'm 169 cm (still hoping to grow 3 more cms) and I weigh quite a bit 140 pounds (but I'm trying to lose weight). Will they be discriminate against me based on this? I'm also told that I'm quite pretty...

I haven't tried dancing but I'm told often that my voice is really nice. I'm pretty musical- I can play the piano, violin, drum kit and guitar. To audition you need to dance but I don't know how to dance- what should I do?

Depending on my high school results, I'm planning on auditioning at the end of the year or possibly next year, is it too late? I.e. Am I too old?

Additionally, my parents want me to go to university next year but I think that I may be able to persuade them to let me train for a year and, if nothing eventuates, come back home to study. Would I be able to do this if I am accepted?

If you are accepted as a trainee, are you allowed to study a course of your preference or do you have to study Arts/Dance type course? I want to study a Science type course in Uni.

I am of Chinese Malaysian background but I am always told that I look Korean/Japanese. I can speak English, Chinese (conversational), basic (limited) French and I am learning basic Korean. Do they mind if you aren't Korean?

    Sorry for the mini-essay :P
What should I do? Thank you so much!!!

  118. Hi,

I'm glad you love the blog.

I would say you're fine. Since you're trying to lose weight, your height is good and you're pretty. They should care too much.

I haven't tried dancing but I'm told often that my voice is really nice. I'm pretty musical- I can play the piano, violin, drum kit and guitar. To audition you need to dance but I don't know how to dance- what should I do?

It's great that you're gifted musically. So work hard on your singing.
But don't skip the dancing. You could learn a dance cover. (If so I've got some good ones that would be easy for you)
Or you could just learn to dance freestyle. (Also if you want a video on that I've got some good ideas for you)

Depending on my high school results, I'm planning on auditioning at the end of the year or possibly next year, is it too late? I.e. Am I too old?

You are not too old as long as you already have talent and don't need years and years of training.

Additionally, my parents want me to go to university next year but I think that I may be able to persuade them to let me train for a year and, if nothing eventuates, come back home to study. Would I be able to do this if I am accepted?

If you get accepted SM will pay for you going to college. But if you want to quit and go back home you always could.

If you are accepted as a trainee, are you allowed to study a course of your preference or do you have to study Arts/Dance type course? I want to study a Science type course in Uni.

Yes I think you do get to choose.

I am of Chinese Malaysian background but I am always told that I look Korean/Japanese. I can speak English, Chinese (conversational), basic (limited) French and I am learning basic Korean. Do they mind if you aren't Korean?

Not at all. Victoria from f(x)is Chinese. So you're fine.

    What should you do??
Well work hard on singing and dance. Have fun and enjoy life.

    Hi Amayingangie,

You can't really sign up for that audition.
You can send your audition email to the one in LA or you can just show up live and audition.

  124. Hi sm girl thnx for ur blog!
Anyway I just want to ask:
    1. I have some scars on my face like acne scars they r not visible from 1m away but since sm takes lots of pics will that affect my chances?
    2. How pretty exactly do u have to be? I'm not head turning pretty coz no one does double takes on me but all my friends tell meim pretty. I just fear that their standards are low though...;
    3. Can I rap instead of sing?
    4. Will they allow you to get plastic surgery?
    Thank you so much!:)

  125. Hi Mika,

It is true that it's harder to do a dance from the Entertainment company. Look at the other dances and maybe choose one that is from JYP or some other company. :)

Hello Prime Evil (what a name)

I'm glad you like the blog. :D

    1. It shouldn't be very bad. Kyuhyun has scars from the accident he was in and he's still fine. Don't worry about it. :D

    2. You don't have to be super pretty. Average looks will be fine. Makeup can make anyone look super great.

    3. Yes you can rap. :)

    4. Yes they will allow I'm sure. But if you'd rather not that would be fine also.

    You're welcome!

  131. Hi SM girl

I hope to enter SM Entertainment.
I am a chinese in malaysia but i not so white on skin colour, is that ok?
I'm already 16 years old but i hope to audition at end of the next year after my SPM. If i audition at 17-18 years old will too old for it?
I can sing, dance and act, but not really so perfect.
I hope to become a singer and i can accept the training.
If i want to e-mail for audition, what is needed in there?
Erm, i can speak chinese, english, cantonese, malay and a little bit korean. But i not live in korea. Is't the chance for me will too small?
As i know, Malaysia have no any SM entertainment audition right?
If i can go to korea for the audition on end of the next year, but isn't the date for audition is fix?
The official trainee is't should pay by ourselve? If yes, how is the price for it?
Sorry for so many question, btw, thank you.^^

    More questions....referring to the audition

    1. I'm only 155-156cm.Will they care? I'm about normal weight, not skinny though..will they make me exercise and stuff while training or do i have to be fit for the audition?

    2. I have pale skin (probably got a bit yellowxD), and double eye-lids,but my eyes are almond,so they aren't THAT big. Do i have an advantage according to looks? Or will i need plastic surgery to get my eyes bigger? And do they tell you to get plastic surgery?

    3. Btw,i'm 17 years old...if i train too long like more than 5 years, do they kick me out if i'm too old?0.o

    4. I can sing well, not a pro tho..but i have a broad range. I'm learning to dance to a few songs, but i can't freestyle..if i don't apply for dancing, will they tell me to do a freestyle dance? or can i tell them i know some dances to songs?

    5. As for the global audition, will there be judges there? cuz i have braces but i'm getting them off in spring. the auditions is before that (in winter)..but if there aren't any judges, how do i tell them? do i tell the camera lady recording?(if there is anyone recording) Will they even record global auditions and post them on youtube like they do for korean (everysing) auditions?

^(sorry thats so many questions in 1).

    6. Is it just me who signs the contract or will they tell me parents somehow? cuz they don't know korean and neither do i..but my parents will be worried if i'm away from my home. Will they have someone to tell them in chinese how the company is and what i have to do as a trainee?

    7. I heard there aren't any MR or mics in the global audition,so music isn't provided either? what if they tell me to dance? do i do that without music too?

    8. As for make-up,i hardly wear any,but i put eyeliner and lip-gloss most the time. Is it ok to audition with that? or do i have to be make-upless? (<--not a word)

My qualities are pale skin,my family says i have a perfect nose..idk if that matters or not. Smallish mouth (it probably got wider due to braces..) Almond eyes, double eyelids. Can sing, know my music theory stuff. Knows cantonese-chinese, english and a bit of french(since we had to learn that).

Overall will i have an advantage? I'm worry that my parents won't let me go that far if i do make it..:/

  133. Ugh,sorry, i forgot to ask this one last one.

Since this is my last year of high school, i'm applying for university. Should i not apply and take another year of high school to wait if i got in sm? or should wait while studying my first year in university?(since sm might take longer than 6 months i heard to reply back for live auditions) the other thing is..idk if my parents will let me drop out of university..i'm taking a music course anyways if i get in...cuz i needa audition for that too>.< but if i don't get in that, and they'll probably waste their money on my first year...so they want me to continue and finish university

btw, if i get in sm..will they contact my university as well? or do i just leave?

AND how many trainees usually make it to the third round?

  139. I hope to enter SM Entertainment.
I am a chinese in malaysia but i not so white on skin colour, is that ok?
I'm already 16 years old but i hope to audition at end of the next year after my SPM. If i audition at 17-18 years old will too old for it?
If i want to e-mail for audition, what is needed in there?
I already answered these question on your other post. :)

I can sing, dance and act, but not really so perfect.
It’s okay if you can’t sing or dance perfectly. Nobody can so they won’t expect that from you.
I hope to become a singer and i can accept the training.
I’m not exactly what you mean but if you’re ready for training that’s good.

Erm, i can speak chinese, english, cantonese, malay and a little bit korean. But i not live in korea. Is't the chance for me will too small?
If you don’t live in Korea that is fine. If they accepted you then you’ll have to move to Korea.

As i know, Malaysia have no any SM entertainment audition right?
They do not as far as I know.

If i can go to korea for the audition on end of the next year, but isn't the date for audition is fix?
Once again I don’t know exactly what you’re trying to say. But if you go to Korea at SM Entertainment they have a weekly audition and you can always go there.

The official trainee is't should pay by ourselve? If yes, how is the price for it?
If you become a real trainee you won’t have to pay for anything. :)
    You’re welcome.

  140. Hi SM Girl. I'm chinese-canadian and i'd like to audition for sm. I live in canada and i'm a citizen. If i move to become a trainee in sm,will i not be a citizen anymore and be a korean citizen?
I’m not sure if you become a citizen of Korea if you get a visa. I’m not sure. Sorry.

    More questions....referring to the audition

    1. I'm only 155-156cm.Will they care? I'm about normal weight, not skinny though..will they make me exercise and stuff while training or do i have to be fit for the audition?
You will exercise and train even if you’re super skinny. You don’t have to be super fit for the audition. Just don’t be a slob and you’ll be good. ;)

    2. I have pale skin (probably got a bit yellowxD), and double eye-lids,but my eyes are almond,so they aren't THAT big. Do i have an advantage according to looks? Or will i need plastic surgery to get my eyes bigger? And do they tell you to get plastic surgery?

I do believe SM has loosened up about plastic surgery. If you don’t want it I don’t think they’ll make you do it.

    3. Btw,i'm 17 years old...if i train too long like more than 5 years, do they kick me out if i'm too old?0.o
Not for sure. If you debut at 23 you’d still be okay. But I would try to train as fast as you can. So before your audition train yourself as much as you can. Practice and practice.

    4. I can sing well, not a pro tho..but i have a broad range. I'm learning to dance to a few songs, but i can't freestyle..if i don't apply for dancing, will they tell me to do a freestyle dance? or can i tell them i know some dances to songs?
As for singing choose a song that fits your voice very well and it’s easy for you to sing. No songs that are too low or high. As for dancing you’ll have to dance no matter what. If you choose a dance cover there or tons of tutorials on YouTube. If you learn to dance freestyle that would be a good option.

If it’s a global audition I assume there will be judges and a camera. Everyone goes through braces so they’ll know they won’t be on forever. You could always let them know that they’ll be off soon.

^(sorry thats so many questions in 1).
That’s okay. It does take a lot of time so if you ask shorter questions and space them out they’d really help me a lot.

    6. Is it just me who signs the contract or will they tell me parents somehow? cuz they don't know korean and neither do i..but my parents will be worried if i'm away from my home. Will they have someone to tell them in chinese how the company is and what i have to do as a trainee?
I think you’ll sing the contract but if your parents don’t want you doing it they can pull you out of SM. You’ll go to Kent which is a school that is for foreigners. So it’s okay if you don’t know Korean. SM will teach you. Your parents really shouldn’t have to worry.

    7. I heard there aren't any MR or mics in the global audition,so music isn't provided either? what if they tell me to dance? do i do that without music too?
You sing A cappella and no mic. As for the dance if you’ve choosen a dance cover or song you’ll have to give it to them. Either CD or Ipod

    8. As for make-up,i hardly wear any,but i put eyeliner and lip-gloss most the time. Is it ok to audition with that? or do i have to be make-upless? (<--not a word)
As for the audition I would wear a little makeup. Very natural like a little blush, a stroke of mascara and lip gloss is fine.

I'm worry that my parents won't let me go that far if i do make it..:/
I think from what I heard you’d have a nice chance. I can’t say for sure as I have not seen you or your talents.

I can’t honestly answer this one for you. This is a choose up to you and your parents.
I would go on with how you would want to live and study as if you’d never heard of SM. Still audition and if you makeup choose between which you want more.

btw, if i get in sm..will they contact my university as well? or do i just leave?
    I don’t know but I’d guess you’d just leave.

AND how many trainees usually make it to the third round?
I’d guess out of 500 probably 3-5. Chances are small. But if you make it to that audition you’ll probably make it into SM.
    Good luck!

    Official trainees... probably about 20.

and what is the percentage for being chosen as trainee?

Chances are very slim. If you have the talents though, it is possible.

    You're welcome :)

    Hello Seo Jun

I don't know what Anyang High School is so I don't know. But if I'd guess SM would want you to go to Kent.

  143. Hi SM girl, i was wondering, how long does it usually take before SMtown replies to the Global Audition application sent to get the time and place for the audition. I heard it takes about two months and some people missed it because they did not get the email in time... I kinda dont want to be one of those people... Also, when i send an application, do I also have to send a video of myself singing or dancing in order for them to send me a time and place for the Global Audition application?

Your blog is super helpful and informative!! I might use this when I'm trying to convince my parents to let me audition, lol~

I also have a few questions for you.
~Out of the few trainees there are, how many are non-East Asian?
~I am half-Filipino, half-Hispanic, and though I look Asian, I have a little tan. Would they dismiss me on account of not being East Asian without considering my looks or talent?

I may come back with more questions, so I hope you can answer those too if I post them ^^

Thank you for taking the time to answer everybody's questions!!

    1) If i passed the e-mail audition, and get offered a place in the Global audition, can i go for the weekly audition in LA as the 2nd round of audition instead?(i might be visiting the US next year) cuz i don't think i'll be able to make it to the global audition, as they do not have Global auditions in my country.

thank you for your time!!! really appreciate it! thanks for opening this blog too!!

It probably would take SM a while to get back with you. At the global auditions there are hundreds of people so it’d take time to look everyone over.
I kinda dont want to be one of those people... Also, when i send an application, do I also have to send a video of myself singing or dancing in order for them to send me a time and place for the Global Audition application?
I would send at least a video of yourself singing.

    Hello Teenage girl!
Your blog is super helpful and informative!! I might use this when I'm trying to convince my parents to let me audition, lol~
Go ahead and show them! :D If it’ll help you I’d show them it.

I also have a few questions for you.
~Out of the few trainees there are, how many are non-East Asian?
The girl Callie was only ¼ Asian and that was fillipino. So there is or at least was 1.
~I am half-Filipino, half-Hispanic, and though I look Asian, I have a little tan. Would they dismiss me on account of not being East Asian without considering my looks or talent?
I wouldn’t think so. As long as you look Asian you’ll probably be fine. I am ½ Asian (Chinese and Japanese) but I didn’t get accepted because I don’t look Asian.
    You’re welcome!
Feel free to ask more questions. I’ll try to respond quickly but I’m very busy right now.

I think you could probably email SM and ask them. I had a friend who emailed them asking some questions and they replied her. So I can’t really answer but I’d email them and see what they say.

  151. Hello Sm Girl,
    I have a question.

Before the global audtion we need to register email or youtube, does that count as audition round 1? if so, does going to the global audition count as audition round 2? if so, does that mean I pass to audition round 3? (and you said earlier that they pay for the ticket to korea for the 3rd round?)

I am a little confused with how the audition rounds work. I have read the older posts, but still was very confused ><

  155. Hi :) I would like to ask your opinion about my chances of actually being a sm trainee. I'm 13 this year. I play a wide range of sports. I can dance a wide range of dances and can ONLY rap :( I have medium brown tanned skin, 167-169cm and 55kg. I have braces but I look fine when I don't smile with my teeth showing. Im Chinese and can speak fluent English and some mandarin as well as Cantonese and Malay. I also have some experience in audio engineering, film making, 2d and 3d effects. And one last thing :) sorry. I'm sending an email audition. I've included a video of myself dancing, fixing a rubiks cube and doing some patterns with it (extra), I only have an mp3 file of me singing so I made it so that it's a video of me singing with a slideshow of my photos. Tho they don't see me singing. Is that ok? The mp3 file should be efficient right? Or should I remake one with me singing. Not just recording. And shld I attach the pictures to the email? Thank you for your time ^^

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hi New,

From what your talents and looks are I'd say you're in good hands.

I would have made a video of you singing instead of an MP3 but you'll probably be okay.

Yes attach the pictures to the email.

I hope you make it! :D

    ReplyDelete
  159. New,

Sorta... the three auditions could be 1. e-mail. 2. Weekly or Global. 3. Final in Korea.

If you're talented or have the potential it should be hard.

    Hi,

To send the video use Windows movie maker and when you publish your video compress it to smaller video size. :)

Its not a silly question. Others have asked me the same thing.

  160. Hi, SM Girl!! ^^

I really wanted to make questions, so here it goes:

1-I'm brazilian and I'm a italian descendant. So, I'm really white and I have green eyes. But ignoring the part of the green eyes, I seem a bit like an asian person. I love singing, dancing and playing the guitar. I can even act really well. I can speak English, Portuguese, a little of Spanish (I do understand Spanish but I can't make sentences really well) and I'm learning Korean and Japanese. Do I have any chances? Because I was thinking about studying in Korea and I really wanted to be part of SME. =)

2-I heard that the problem with non-asian people is that the judges don’t like our behavior. Is that the truth? Or the problem is beeing non-asian?

3-Is there any non-asian trainees in SME or in the other entertainment companies?

4-Should I try the audition or should I give up since I'm not asian?

It is a big part not being Asian, after all SM is an Asian company. But I wouldn't give up if you're not Asian.

3-Is there any non-asian trainees in SME or in the other entertainment companies?

Last I heard SM only had trainees that were part Asian. As little as 1/4 Asian. So maybe they'll soon accept someone who isn't Asian.

4-Should I try the audition or should I give up since I'm not asian?

Don't give up until you give it your best shot. :)

I have a question- What's a daily/weekly schedule like for a trainee who's a student too? Do you have any flexibility? I heard that you only get 4 hours (or less x_x) of sleep a night, is that true?

Once you've sent an email, you basically fly to Korea or any other place holding the audition and re-audition? and if you pass THAT audition, do you fly somewhere else for the next round or is it all held then and there? sorry im kinda confused. step 1- send email
    2- Fly to audition
3- If you make it, its the second round? or third/final?
4- Please tell me what the rounds are about. like when, where
5- so the email doesnt really help?

I think this is how it works but I never got that far so I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE.

Them sending you an email to go to global audition counts as the second round.

And then going to Korea for the final round.

    Email does help!!!

I'm Emyl. I'm 15 years old and I'm pure Filipino. I was good in singing but the problem is I sang mostly woman songs that my mother likes and I'm aware that in my present condition , my voice wouldn't fit for a snsd song. In dancing, well I like dancing freestyle but I don't get praised for it so I can call it mediocre. Thanks for being here to answer my questions! I loved your blog because of that. My questions are:

    1. I'm living in the Philippines, what is the most feasible way of auditioning: global auditions, email audition, or weekly korea/usa audition?

    2. I could speak English, Filipino, very little of Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, and Hokkien. Does it slim my chances of being accepted?

    3. I'm 172 cm and 132 pounds but I got a little appearance problem. Does this hinder me from auditioning?

I would start with E-mail and then hope that there is a global audition nearby. If there aren’t any global auditions going on you could always try to go into the weekly audition in Korea.

    2. I could speak English, Filipino, very little of Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, and Hokkien. Does it slim my chances of being accepted?

Being able to speak English is a big plus. So no it ups your chances. 

Wait… are you a guy or girl?

Feel free to email me at pau.sarah@yahoo.com

    Hi Marcel,

    1. how does a person audition to be in a band?(like TRAX)
I sing for your audition and also play an instrument… such as drums, guitar.

    2. will sm entertainment debut another band?
I’m sure if SM had the right people they would.

    3. how did the members of TRAX audition?
I know very little about TRAX so I don’t know. You can probably Google it though.

    - can I make a audition video of my band and send it to sm entertainment, hoping that they can debut us as the band we are?
You can try that! Sometimes SM will only take some of you though… so be prepared!

    - what type of training did the members of TRAX got. Did they dance?
All SM trainees had to learn to dance, sing, act, model, etc.

    1. when i audition do i sing and dance or sing and then dance?
    I think you sing first.

    2. what are good songs to sing
Something that sits well in your voice and has a nice melody.

    3. can i do a song from one of the company's groups
I wouldn’t not sing one of their songs. They’ll end up comparing you and they’ll like the original better.

    4. can i play an instrumnent
Yes you can! But you must bring it!

    p.s. love your blog!!!

    Thank you!

  175. Hey SM Girl, i just found your blog recently and everything you mentioned here helped me a lot and also informed me of stuff that i had no idea, so thank you very much ^____^
But i have a question that is still unanswered; My question is that do you need the consent from your parents to simply audition for this? I mean i know that you need permission from your parents once your allowed to become a trainee and stuff, but what i want to know if you need parents permission like a consent type of thing for just auditioning on their live audition [for example the one that will be held in NY, not through youtube or email...
If you know the answer to my question i will be very grateful to you! ^___^

    [sorry if i typed a lot x.x ]

  176. Hi Lily,

    You're welcome! :D

To audition you don't need your parents permission. But at any time your parents can force you to leave SM if you don't get their consent.

I don't think your parents need to do anything until you sign a contract with SM.

P.S. You actually didn't type all that much. (Which makes it easier for me.. so thanks)

  177. Hey SM Girl or Callie!

I'm Dana, right now I'm 18 years old. I was born in the U.S but I'm Chinese.

I guess you could say I'm above average looking since a lot of people always say I'm pretty. But my singing is not that good, and my dancing is okay. And I'm also 155.6cm, which is pretty short haha! But do you still think I have a good chance of getting recruited?

  178. HalaBluu,

SMgirl here. Callie is in SM and isn't allowed to talk to people about SM. Even I haven't been able to chat with her for a looooong time.

You still have a chance. Work on both your singing and dancing and try out. Just be prepared!

  180. Hi SM girl, it's been 2 months since I sent my audition video...I really want to become a singer+ instrumentalists (eg: guitar band etc.). Like so I'm really good at music especially playing piano, but here're the questions:

1). I apply for the global audition and they sent me 2 messages, the latest one saying they'll sent me the time and date on Feb 28-29 and asked me to be patient. Is that an automated respond?

2). As I said, I am a good musician but the global audition says that applicants for singer are to sing without instruments. However, the weekly audition says otherwise. Can I disobey and bring in a guitar with me? (because I'd just finished composing a song that is to be sung with a guitar+ I think that would give me a higher chance of passing the 1st round)

3). Will the judges have the candidates' profile with them when that person is auditioning (for instant, what the candidates are capable of judging from the application they'd sent earlier either vial email or video)

4). Lastly, should I continue on if somehow I got the chance to go and audition in Japan (in which I have to fly there) or should I go to the weekly audition in Korea instead and give the global audition up (since the weekly audition allows instrument for instrualmentalist)

I'm looking forward to your reply

-what if i'm Filipino do you think i have a chance?

-do i need to have a website for them to reach me?

    Thank you!

  188. Thank you for posting all this information!

I read somewhere that they only look for Koreans in their weekly auditions in Korea. Is this true? Will they not accept non Korean asians? :(

    ReplyDelete
  189. For mjsalomon, I would say a picture of your face, face and body, and then your whole body would be good. I read it from JYP online audition. You do not need a website, but you probably need a home-phone or email.

TheSkyIsPurple, I hope they do not only look for Koreans! I am sure that there are many other companies out there that can help you out! There are non-koreans in many companies, but try to stand out by practicing!!! Practice will help you accomplish goals!

Follow Daniel's advise and you're good.

I've been having a lot of trouble keeping up with this blog so if I miss your questions please email them to me.

  191. Haii! I have a question to ask you!
I'm not asian, I'm also short and blonde.
Does this effect my chances of getting in greatly!? D:

  192. How do you know when you pass your audition?

  193. Hi SM Girl!

I just stumbled upon your blog and I have a lot of questions to ask. See, I'm going to Korea this July and I have no idea of what the Walk in auditions would be like.

So, what are the things that I should prepare? Do I have to prepare a dance routine even if I will just audition for singing? Do I also have to bring my own CD for the singing part or the auditions will be done in acapella?

I am Asian (a Filipino), and I'm 17 years old but I'm short for my age. Will it be okay?

I know basic Korean, and I know how to introduce myself well. I have no problems with the pronunciation as well. I know Japanese too. Will they consider it?

When I'm actually there in SM's building, what should I do? Do I just walk in and tell them I'm auditioning? Or do I have to print out and fill out stuff before going there?

I will be staying in Korea for a week. Do you think that will be enough?

    Thank you in advance!

  194. Tinkerfall,

I think not looking Asian might lower your chances but I'd still give it a shot.

    Love Forever,

SM will contact you phone/email/mail if you pass. It can take a while though. They won't contact you if you fail though.

    Karla,

So, what are the things that I should prepare? Do I have to prepare a dance routine even if I will just audition for singing? Do I also have to bring my own CD for the singing part or the auditions will be done in acapella?

If you prepare a dance routine remember to bring a CD of the your music or else you Ipod.
    Yes you must sing acapella.

I am Asian (a Filipino), and I'm 17 years old but I'm short for my age. Will it be okay?

    That's fine.

I know basic Korean, and I know how to introduce myself well. I have no problems with the pronunciation as well. I know Japanese too. Will they consider it?

Of course! Being able to do that will improve your chances of getting in! :D

When I'm actually there in SM's building, what should I do? Do I just walk in and tell them I'm auditioning? Or do I have to print out and fill out stuff before going there?

Just walk in. You'll need to fill out a info sheet but they give it to you and it's pretty quick and easy.

I will be staying in Korea for a week. Do you think that will be enough?

It should be. Audition as soon as you can that way if they want you they'll have time to contact you before you leave.

    You're welcome!

  195. Hi SM girl!

i just have a few questions for you~

1.I am Bengali (South Asian) and Colombian.
Since i am Bengali, I have a darker complexion. A little lighter than milk chocolat.

    2. I speak fluent Spanish and english and i'm pcking up korean pretty fast so does that give me points?

    3. THERE IS NO ASIAN IN ME WHATSOEVER. Is that still ok?

4.I am a dancer. And i have been told I am really good. I am charismatic,a people person, and im not gorgeous but I have been told many times I have a very beautiful face (even from strangers...?)so is that was SM looks for?

5.I am like SNSD's Tiffany,I have not one family member in Korea,I do not know the language fluently, and I have no one coming with me. Will SM provide me with food, shelter, and clothing?

6.I am really worried for my skin color. This is really the one thing pushing me back and making think twice because I'm not a light tan but im not extremely dark either so I am very insecure about this topic. Please tell me now....

    Thank you!
